zField Trip: 2013/10/20 Napa Valley and Castello di Amorosa,
The October 20 (Sunday) field trip will be a day trip to Napa Valley and Castello di Amorosa, an ostentatious (read: endlessly photogenic), five-story, 30,000-square-foot hillside stone castle, complete with moat and turrets. It's most photogenic in October when the leaves in the vineyards surrounding the structure are changing. For some inspiration on exterior shots, visit their web site, http://www.castellodiamorosa.com, with a home page banner image slide show. General entry into the castle is $19. You can get more elaborate tours for different rates.

zField Trip: 2013/11/23 Hike/bike the new Bay Bridge trail
Our hike/bike field trip on the new Bay Bridge trail on Nov. 23, for Magic Hour shots of the bridge got a surprising turn-out, with four people signed up and four last-minute participants. We weren't alone. Scores, perhaps hundreds, of residents walked and rode all afternoon. The CHP bike patrol moved pedestrians back to the gate as closing time approached—but we BCC bikers hung in to the last minute and got shots of the bridge with its lights on.

zField Trip: 2013/12/20-22 - Big Sur and Bob's Place
Our pre-Christmas field trip to Big Sur emerged adventurous and popular, despite loss of access to our prime destination, U.S. Forest Service Pfeiffer Beach, to forest fire. Bob Apte's cabin in Carmel Highlands—a three-story shingle-sided pole house a quarter-mile up a one-lane road above Highlands Inn—was a field trip in itself.

zField Trip: 2014/06/21 - Ft. Funston (hang gliders)
The field trip to photograph the Fort Funston hang gliders in the southwest corner of San Francisco woke everyone when early carpoolers Mary DeShaw, Roddie Stelle, Carol Thomas and Ken Osborn couldn't find the Subway Sandwiches meeting place at the given address. They quickly found a new spot and phoned Helene and John Vilett, Dale Mead, and Obie Gilkerson in for a landing. Impressed (okay, relieved) by their resourcefulness, Dale declared, "Great! Everything is going according to plan!" The grey day had its challenges, but a lack of hang gliders wasn't one of them; the 18-knot winds were relentless but perfect for the pilots. The colorful flying machines looked that much more garish in the flat skies, and the humid haze made the spectacular Pacific coast appear to stretch even further into the distance. The images caught that day convey the moody ambiance and constant action as gliders adorned the sky, including the dangling legs of tandem passengers. The early birds also left a half-hour early, while those of us who stayed to the windy end were rewarded as the cloud curtains opened, revealing patches of blue sky for about 20 minutes.

zField Trip: 2014/07/19 - Black Diamond Mine
Nine of us had a delightful day at the Black Diamond Mine Regional Preserve, Antioch, enjoying a customized tour of the former Hazel-Atlas sand mine, run in the 1920's-40's by Hazel-Atlas Glass Company of Oakland to make glass jars. Host miners Ben and Gary made the customized tour a memorable outing, maximizing our time in the most photogenic areas. Donning hard hats and flashlights, we toured about 1050 feet; the mine comprises eight miles of underground tunnels reaching myriad carved caves as big as football fields, from which sand was extracted. We also learned that we were standing under the fossilized remnants of the Pacific Ocean floor, created millions of years before the Pacific Tectonic Plate lifted the coast. The post-lunch trek home included stops at farm buildings too pretty to pass up.
